El Diablo fuma (y guarda las cabezas de los cerillos quemados en la misma caja), by Mexican director Ernesto Martínez Bucio, had its world premiere at the most recent edition of the Berlin International Film Festival, where it was recognized with the GWFF Award (Best First Feature) as part of the Perspectives section, making it one of the most promising Mexican films of the year.
Produced by Mandarina Cine, the film tells the story of five siblings who, after being abandoned by their parents, blend their fears with those of their caregiver, their schizophrenic grandmother, who tells them stories about the devil, dissolving the boundaries between the real and the imaginary.
The recognition at the Berlinale opens new doors for this film, which promises to continue its journey through international festivals, carrying with it a powerful voice of Mexican and Latin American cinema.
In 2022, El Diablo fuma... was supported by the CTT Exp & Rentals award from our Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund.
